Security guard cost

Three of 27 UK guarding firms and councils we read publish an hourly rate: £14.99 and £20 an hour for static guarding, and a council's £19.75 per guard for hall bookings. Under every rate sits a floor no firm can avoid: the £12.71 National Living Wage, employer NI at 15%, a 3% pension minimum and a £204 SIA licence. Tell us what you need guarding and Joe will talk it through.

  • Read and answered by Joe himself, never passed to a firm or a list
  • Information only: no legal, regulatory or tax advice

Three steps

  • Step 1 Tell us what you need and how to reach you. About a minute, no account.
  • Step 2 Joe reads it himself and replies directly. Nobody else receives it.
  • Step 3 You get a short call to talk it through. Go ahead with something, ask more, or do nothing.

This is a free information site. When you send an enquiry, Joe, who runs this site, reads it and replies to you himself; no security firm receives your details and you pay nothing to ask. It carries no advertising, no sponsored placement and no affiliate links, and no firm in the table has paid to be there. Every rate is read from the firm's or council's own page, and every wage, tax and licence figure from GOV.UK, HMRC or the Living Wage Foundation, on the date shown. A published rate is what a firm advertises, not a quote for your site.

Every provider below was read on its own page through our fetch box, and the row says what that page published on the day we read it. 3 of 27 publish a figure; the rest are listed too, because how many will not quote a number is the most useful thing about this market. Nothing here is a quote for your job: it is what other people advertise.

Every row is a verbatim sentence read from the named source's own page through our fetch service on the date shown, hash-pinned to the stored read (the sha of the page's visible text; the raw page is mirrored to R2). 3 of the 27 named sources that could be read published a usable figure; 24 published none and are recorded as not published, never filled in; 3 could not be read (blocked, dead or unreachable) and count nowhere. The headline figures (median, minimum, maximum, quartiles) are over ONE figure per source in GBP (a source's median where its page yielded several accepted sentences), so N counts sources, never sentences; 40 candidate sentence(s) were refused by a reviewer with the reason recorded. The fuller derivation this dataset is chartered to grow into (not yet what the figures above are; they are each source's own published figure as read): the published charge rates per service (static guard per hour, door supervisor per hour, event steward per hour, mobile patrol per visit, key holding per year) across every firm that publishes one, the median and range per region, the share of firms that publish versus quote, and the margin of each published rate over the statutory cost floor

Frequently asked

How much does a security guard cost per hour in the UK?

The rates we found published run from £14.99 to £20 an hour for static guarding. Only 3 of 27 firms and councils we read publish one; the rest quote after a survey. (UK security guard price index: every row, with its source)

What is the minimum a guard can be paid?

£12.71 an hour, the National Living Wage for workers aged 21 and over from April 2026. The employer also pays NI at 15% above £96 a week and at least 3% pension. (GOV.UK: National Living Wage increases to £12.71 per hour)

How much is an SIA licence?

£204 for a first licence or a renewal from 1 April 2026. (GOV.UK: SIA licence fee rebate ends in April 2026)

What do UK security firms charge per hour for guarding, door supervision, patrols and key holding?

The median published figure is £17.50. The whole spread runs £14.99 to £20, over 2 figures read on 2026-10-28. A spread that wide is the honest answer: what you pay depends on the scope, so the table below shows every reading and who published it. (UK Security Guard Price Index: every row, with its source)

How many providers publish a price at all?

3 of the 27 read, out of 30 named. The others answer with a quote form. They are listed in the table as publishing no price rather than dropped, because the share of a market that will not put a number on its own page is itself a finding. (UK Security Guard Price Index: every row, with its source)

Where do these figures come from, and when were they read?

Each one is a sentence on the provider's own page, read on 2026-10-28 through our own fetch box and stored with the hash of the page's text, so the row can be checked against what was there that day. The row links to the page it came from. (UK Security Guard Price Index: every row, with its source)

Is this a price for my job?

No. Every figure here is what a provider advertises on its own page for its own packages, not a quote for your work, and the spread from £14.99 to £20 is exactly why. Scope is what moves it. Ask for a price and you get one; this page is so you know what you are hearing when you do. (UK Security Guard Price Index: every row, with its source)

Who answers an enquiry from this page?

Joe, who runs this site, reads every enquiry himself and replies directly. No security firm receives your details.
